About the Program

Welcome to Hessen! With six million inhabitants and about 21,000 square kilometers, Hessen is the fifth largest of the German federal states, situated right in the middle of Germany. The state capital and seat of government is Wiesbaden. The largest city is Frankfurt am Main, with an international airport that serves as one of the most important transportation hubs in Europe.

Hessen is cosmopolitan and open-minded but also deeply rooted in its heritage and history. Frankfurt, a fast-developing financial metropolis, is just half an hour away from the UNESCO world heritage Rhine Valley scenery with its historic castles and vineyards. From Kassel to Darmstadt and from Fulda to Wiesbaden, the cities of Hessen are unique in their cultural offerings, tradition, architecture and food. Hessen, the home of the Brothers Grimm, offers a stage for art and culture. It is a land of nature and one of the most densely wooded states in Germany. Hessen is also home to the Rheingau, one of the most renowned wine-growing regions in Germany.

The State of Hessen is home to some of the country's leading universities and research institutes. They teach and carry out research in all major disciplines with a high degree of excellence. They are all well-known both for their academic reputation and for their first-class facilities. The strong teaching and research tradition attracts high calibre students from all over the world. Over 12% of the student population in Hessen is international, and students come from all over the world to take advantage of the high-quality academics and great quality of life. Regardless of whether you are an undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral student or a faculty member, we would like to invite you to Hessen.

Visiting Hessen is like time travel through the architecture of the ages, from medieval castles and picturesque half-timbered houses to post-modern industrial design, each with monuments of global significance. Take a weekend excursion to Berlin, the capital of Germany, in just 3.5 hours with the fast ICE Sprinter train or visit other European cities. In Hessen you are in the heart of Europe.
